We’re doing team building… but we actually think that word is pretty lame.

In fact, we’ve been quite ambivalent about this rather well-worn, complex word and concept ever since we started 17 years ago.

On the one hand, team building is an invaluable opportunity to improve cooperation and increase an organization’s efficiency. On the other hand, it is a term that can embrace everything from extremely structured learning to playful improvisation. Some inevitably get horrifying images on their retinas from previous team building activities they have participated in when they hear the word.

So when we talk about “team building,” we open the door to a wide range of misunderstandings.Some see team building as an opportunity for entertainment and fun, while others expect in-depth learning and development. Both can be quite fine! But things go wrong if you think you have ordered one but get the other.

But what should we call it instead?

“Behavior-Enhancing Experiences” or “Multifaceted Collaborative Improvement Activities” aren’t exactly great either 🙂

We must admit that we cannot change the language and customers’ perceptions of one particular word.

But we do know what works instead. Whenever.

It is to have a conversation where we align expectations and listen to what you, as a customer, say (and don’t say).

It creates the basis for the best events.
